School may be out for summer, but that doesn’t mean that learning should end! Now is a great time of year to find different learning experiences outside the classroom. I grew up around this area and have many fond memories of day trips to different sites as a kid. Working at Taylor Studios I’ve also had the opportunity to explore other notable nearby museums and nature centers that have become favorites as well.

Here’s my list of Top Five Sites to See this Summer:

  1. City Museum –This site is an amazing playground for children AND adults inviting you to climb, learn and explore at this imaginative space that makes use of reclaimed building materials from the area!

  1. St. Louis Zoo – Six different zoo zones showcasing an array of animal habitats and a discovery area encourages hands-on interaction. And to make it even better—admission is FREE!

  1. Lincoln Heritage Museum – This recently opened two-story site on Lincoln College’s campus was designed and built by Taylor Studios. The downstairs area incorporates a timeline of Lincoln’s life and showcases historic artifacts. The upstairs offers an interactive exhibit experience, that rather than keeping visitors back, invites them to touch and learn about Lincoln’s life!

  1. Connor Prairie Interactive History Park Travel to 1836 Prairietown, take a historic Balloon Voyage or experience the Civil War while wandering around this outdoor site interacting with period figures, live animals and more! Last summer the design department took a fieldtrip to check it out, read more about our experience here.

  1. Turkey Run State Park A great place for outdoor activities like hiking and canoeing but also home to historic sites and a nature center that offers interpretive naturalist services all year long. Make a day of it with a morning hike and afternoon float trip!

Bonus— The Springfield Lincoln Sites around the state Capitol offer an array of opportunities to learn about Lincoln and Illinois in general. Check out the Lincoln Museum, home, and tomb (be sure to rub Abe’s ‘lucky nose’).
