5 Points for a Fabulous & Functional Infographic

First off, let’s define an infographic, an infographic organizes information visually in an interesting and relevant way in an effort to gain and hold the audiences’ attention until that information is consumed and understood. It’s not just a matter of simply adding color to copy or little icons here and there—a true infographic should have visual merit that reinforces the content. So how can we make successful infographics? Here are five tips to guide you!

  1. Establish an Action Item What is the goal of your inforgraphic—to inform, to encourage action, to change opinions? Once the end goal is established, the direction can be fleshed out to work towards accomplishing those needs.

  2. Consider Audience Aesthetics Make sure the visuals including colors, illustration style, imagery, fonts etc. draw in the desired viewer. You wouldn’t necessarily want to use pastel colors to appeal to hunters nor decorative scripty fonts to attract scientists, know your audience and play to their desires!

  3. Develop Voice This follows right along with knowing your audience and appealing to their tastes. Will the target audience be drawn to humor, statistics, charts and graphics? Know these desires and speak to that!

  4. Be Brief (when possible) Being concise will help your infographic to be read and absorbed quickly. Too much information may cause a viewer to loose interest or skip important details to get to the end. But on that note, also be sure you’re not leaving out any key elements that may skew the information or miss-lead the viewer.

  5. Ensure Accuracy Of course your infographic should be giving correct information, make sure you do your research before hand (this helps with establishing the end goal too) and credit sources as needed.

Have you or will you be creating an inforgraphic any time soon? Make use of these tips and your information will be more likely to reach and impact your target audience. Need some inspiration?
