Have you made your New Year’s resolutions? No, I’m not talking about you personally – I’m talking about your organization! Just like people, parks and museums should look to the new year as an opportunity to refresh and revitalize their operations and offerings. What can your site do better? What have been those “big steps” that your team’s been putting off, always promising to “get around to it later”? What are your “big dreams” for what you want your site to become?

Asking yourself a few important questions might help you better define what your organization should focus on as the new year dawns. Consider the questions below – and what your answers to these questions might tell you. From these, you can begin to draw up your 2018 “New Year’s resolutions.”

Are you satisfied with the number of visitors your site gets?

Are you happy with the diversity of visitors that your site gets?

Are you attracting young visitors – those who will be the lifeblood of your site in future decades?

Are you satisfied with your site’s current mission?

Are your operations, both daily and long-term, in-sync with your site’s mission?

Is your staff as passionate as they were the day that they were hired?

Are you satisfied with the way that your site is marketed to the outside world?

Does your site have one identifiable and coherent “central theme” or “central message” that spurs every single interpretive offering?

Are you satisfied with the current state of your site’s facilities, buildings, and/or trails?

Do you have budgetary concerns, worries, or pitfalls?

Is there anything stopping your site from being all that it can be?

Take a few moments to think over these questions, and share them with your staff and leadership team. The new year is a time to revitalize your organization, refresh your offerings, and finally tackle those threats and take on those opportunities that have long been waiting.

It is 2018. What is your site’s resolution?
