Next week is going to the dogs at Taylor Studios! And with National Dog Day approaching on August 26, 2018 and the Dog Days of Summer wrapping up, it’s only appropriate.

But what are the Dog Days of Summer anyway? Generally falling between July 3rd and August 11th, they most often refer to the hottest days of the year. And while this may conjure up images of dogs lounging on porches in the shade to beat the summer swelter, these days actually derive from a celestial canine connection.

According to National Graphic, the Dog Days of Summer actually reference when Sirius, the brightest star in the Northern hemisphere, rises just before the sun. Curious where you can see the Dog Star? Sirius is the most notable star in the constellation Canis Major and is often referred to as Orion’s Dog. Simply draw a line through Orion’s belt and find the brightest star. Need a visual?
