Case Study: Burpee Museum of Natural History

The Burpee Museum has been serving the community of the Rock River Valley for more than 50 years. Originally started as a private collection stored in two small Victorian mansions, the museum has grown into what is today the Burpee Museum of Natural History.

A 2600 square foot gallery in the new, modern museum facility was reserved for a large biological exhibit. Taylor Studios designed, built, and installed a new exhibit titled “Windows to Wilderness.” The exhibit gave visitors an overview of the natural landscape around the Northern Illinois area with an emphasis on three distinct local ecosystems: Prairie, Wetland, and Forest. Visitors experienced specimens and artifacts mounted throughout the exhibit while learning about the various ecosystems. Viewers were then invited to see how these ecosystems could be found in their own backyard through a variety of interactives. Bright, inviting graphics and high-quality photographs helped guide visitors through the exhibit space.
