Case Study: Mary K. Oxley Nature Center

Taylor Studios designed, built, and installed exhibits for the newly renovated Mary K. Oxley Nature Center. The focal point of the exhibits was a long, interactive wall mural transitioning through several Oklahoma habitats. Interpretive panels placed throughout the mural prompted visitor interaction and showed different views, such as a magnified view of green algae in a water habitat. Three portable learning stations interpreting different elements of the habitats were themed to blend seamlessly into the mural, while offering the flexibility of moveable carts.

One challenge in this project came from the main wall in the exhibit gallery, which was prone to water leakage. Taylor Studios designed a removable mural so if a leak occurred, damage to the mural could be prevented.

Also, in order to help the client maximize their fabrication budget, Taylor Studios designed exhibit cabinetry for the Center’s own woodworkers to construct. This way, the cabinetry matched the overall design of the rest of the exhibits and more of the fabrication budget was able to go toward realistic models and other exhibit elements which were outside the capability of Center staff.
