Can You Really Have Structure in a Creative Firm?

Imagination and creativity are endless, however budgets and schedules are not. No matter how creative or revolutionary an exhibit idea is, it is not beneficial if the budget or schedule constraints are such that the exhibit cannot be realistically paid for or completed on time. Adding structure to the creative process ensures these limitations are not overlooked.

Limiting Factors

Budget is a limiting factor for most people whether you are shopping for a car, building a house, or designing and building a brand new interpretive exhibit. When an exhibit project starts, you are understandably very excited (and so are the designers!). Through brainstorming activities, that excitement builds even more which leads to bigger and better ideas and before you know it you have enough exhibit ideas to fill a football stadium. Unfortunately, the budget only accounts for an exhibit space of 1,000 ft2.

Saving You Heartache

The creative process builds excitement and sometimes this excitement can lead to ideas that don’t fit within the reality of the situation. That is where process comes into play. Our project managers conduct budget reality checks early and often. These checks allow the team to concentrate on designing the best exhibit possible at a specific budget point which still meets the needs, goals, and objectives set during the first phase of the process. If you don’t budget often, exhibits can become unwieldy. Regular budgeting will save you heartache in the end by eliminating the need to reduce exhibitry when you discover it was overdesigned.

Grand Opening!

A project’s schedule is another reality that must always be taken into account. There are grand openings to consider, tourist season for which to reopen, and dates at which funding sometimes runs out. If TSI was not able to meet these deadlines, our projects would not be successful. Designs take time. It takes multiple team members working together for months to create the best designs possible. Without setting milestone dates and deadlines for deliverables, how would a project ever be completed on time?

No All-Nighters

Our process allows for projects to be scheduled months in advance. The schedules we provide detail when each deliverable will be sent to you and when your team will need to be available for reviews (all dates are agreed upon during the contracting phase). Our process also allows for internal scheduling of each employees’ workload weeks in advanced. This helps keep employees on a somewhat normal working schedule – no all-nighters or last minute cram sessions needed to get the job done.

Following Process & Being Creative

Taylor Studios uses processes and procedures to allow for creativity while accounting for the realities of each project. By following a well-defined and proficiently executed process, which has been refined over the last 24 years, exhibits are creative and installed on time and within budget.
