The Cost of Exhibit Design Services

Cost of Exhibit Design Services

Custom exhibit design can be a complex service to put a price on.  In the museum and interpretive center realm, design is typically priced as a percentage of the overall budget.  In order to manage our man (and woman) hours within a fixed budget, we have developed a well-defined, collaborative design process. The process details exactly what clients can expect every step of the way, and we typically budget for one round of revisions per deliverable.  When additional revisions are requested that go beyond the contracted scope of work, we discuss the additional costs with our client before proceeding with a Change Order.

Some additional services that may add costs include:

  • Highly realistic 3D renderings

  • Animated fly-through of the space

  • Renderings (in addition to what is provided in the contracted deliverable)

  • Developing marketing materials for the project

  • Copywriting changes (above and beyond the allotted revisions)

  • Content changes, especially late in the process – changing the content within a design can potentially change the visitor flow, physical layout, graphic design, and copywriting.  Changing content late in the design process can be expensive.

  • Additional on-site meetings or presentations

As design professionals, our job is to be excellent listeners and communicators.  We absorb your vision and turn it into a physical space that suits your audience’s needs.  With 20+ years of design experience under our belts, we anticipate and forewarn our clients when they may be asking for services that are outside our agreed scope of work. Most of the time, this forewarning is appreciated and they understand additional services cost extra money.

Nothing we do should ever come as a surprise to our clients (thats where the collaborative design process comes in). Making changes and adjustments should happen throughout each phase of the process. Thats why we encourage clients to speak up when they dont like something. Its far easier and more cost effective to make changes earlier rather than later.
